Surfshark VPN Review
Surfshark is a privacy protection suite based on virtual private network architecture. The core premise of Surfshark is to make online privacy protection seamless for everyone by implementing advanced encryption and network optimization technologies. Surfshark is the only VPN service which allows unlimited simultaneous connections. The company developing Surfshark privacy protection software – Surfshark Ltd. – is registered in the British Virgin Islands – a part of their strict no-logs policy.
Surfshark is a new VPN service based in the British Virgin Islands and was founded in 2018. Even though it is a rather new product it’s absolutely comparable to the market-leading providers and has already become high-end. It offers a lot off advanced options for users and in the following we’d like to check if it’s ready to beat the industries best.
Surfsharks’s features include reliable security, impressive speeds, and the ability to stream geo-restricted content from all over the world. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Here’s a detailed overview of the Surfshark platform and all its features:
First things first! Security is the most important aspect for every VPN user and Surfshark has a lot to offer. The company’s standards are equal to the leading providers and even better. There are a lot of useful features every user can profit from.
They offer a “clean web” feature that prevents you from getting unwanted ads and protects you from trackers or malware. This is definitely next-level ad block technology. Of course, you can adjust this service and allow exceptions for certain websites.
The encryption level has military standard and a MultiHop double VPN chain. This allows you to encrypt your data across two or more servers and improves your security, which is really nice!
By now, a kill switch should be a standard component of a VPN client but not every provider offers a reliable emergency cut. Surfshark offers a solid kill switch and prevents your activity to be exposed. Futhermore, there is a Zero-knowledge DNS that provides a private DNS on every server and makes it almost impossible to be tracked or spied on.
The encryption level is granted through high-level secure encryption protocols such as OpenVPN and IKEv2.
Surfshark offers 500+ servers in 50 countries (Feb 2019) which is not much if you compare it to the leading service providers. But since they were only founded in 2018 and already have high numbers, we expect them to expand the server count very soon.
Good location: The British Virgin Islands
The BVI are a British Overseas Territory and are under UK influence. While this means that they officially do not belong to the so called 14-eyes-countries there is a clear connection to the UK.
Due to the unclear extent of this connection we cannot guarantee that Surfshark can offer the same security as other providers that are not based in or connected to one of the 14-eyes countries.
The speed is impressive. For a long time, there were rumors about a lack of speed but it turned out to be a myth. Using Surfshark is almost the same as surfing without a VPN. There is absolutely no restriction in speed. As always, we tried different servers in different countries for different purposes such as streaming, downloading, or normal surfing.
Even while streaming or downloading high-quality videos we experienced no problems whatsoever. This makes Surfshark a reliable option for people streaming or downloading on a daily basis.
Since Surfshark is a new service it’s hard to give a final verdict about their support. But, what we saw was really good and they provided customer support above-average.
There are 3 ways to solve a problem – if one appears. Firstly, they offer a detailed FAQ-section that offers answers to basic problems. Secondly, you could use the contact form to get in touch with the customer support. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a phone number to call, which is a bit of a downside. Lastly, there is a live chat and that is the best possibility in our opinion. We had a good experience using the chat and would recommend it to anybody seeking help concerning Surfshark. The reaction time for the contact was between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, which is okay.
Unfortunately their answers did not always fulfill our needs but in this case our problem description was a little vague.
As an average user it’s unlikely to experience a problem that might lead to long or complicated support requests, but if it happens, you get a good service.
Surfshark offers you 3 different plans. Each plan has a different term.
The sign up process is easy and fast. The information is well presented and that makes for a serious impression.
You just need to enter a valid e-mail address and your payment details. There are numerous ways of payment. You can use your credit card, payment services like Alipay and even crypto currency, which allows absolute anonymity. But keep in mind that it could be possible for Surfshark to detect your real IP during the registration process. Even if it’s unlikely, it’s hard to claim 100% safety and anonymity.
After signing up, you can download the client and start the installing process. The e-mail you receive contains detailed instructions for to following steps.
Surfshark offers a simple and easy-to-use client. It’s quick and the instructions are clear. The installation process is fast and easy, so even if you’re not an IT expert, there is nothing to be afraid of.
Once installed, all you need to do is pick a server/location and connect!
That’s already all you need to do. There are no interlaced menus, just clear instructions.
You just need a few clicks to get to know the structure of the client. Adjust the settings to your liking and profit from the innovative “clean web” or “whitelister” technology that is explained in the app.
The signup process and making the first steps is so easy and fast that it really surprised us.
Surfshark is new name on the map which definitely deserves some attention; it could become a real threat for the market leaders. Since it is still a “young” service it’s necessary to improve some points like the server count or some support services.
The software is very easy to use and offers some innovative features that make a real difference in user experience. You get the usual plans and the now standard 30-day-money-back guarantee.
The level of encryption seems reliable and trustworthy. The technical security matches the professionalism it shows within the service’s whole appearance.
Surfshark keeps no log files and until now, there is no evidence to believe otherwise.
The new shark is coming for the established providers - and it’s fast. Given that their services and software is already that good, we expect a high flying bird. Keep an eye on that one!
